Rome has been the capital of Italy for only a little over a century and a half, but it has been an integral part of Italian culture for over 2,500 years. Though the Colosseum is the iconic building in Rome, many other fascinating buildings exist today. One such building is the Pantheon. Built in 125 AD, this temple was originally built as a monument to Roman Gods. The unique feature of this building is the hole in the center of the roof, which allows light to shine into the structure, and function as a reverse sundial, with the light being concentrated in certain areas as the day goes on.

Throughout Rome, many fountains can be seen, though the most famous is the Trevi Fountain, one of the largest open air fountains in the world, and one of the largest fountains designed in Baroque architecture. Visitors often throw coins into the fountain, which is said to bestow the luck of romance if two coins are thrown in.

Within the city of Rome lies one of the smallest nations in the world, the Vatican City. Visiting Vatican City is a breathtaking experience, with Saint Peter's Basilica being the most famous building. Within the Basilica, and with it one of the most famous statues of the artist Michelangelo, the Pieta.
